Part 40: Pay to Play
Part 1 - Pay to PlayThe life of a Ronin is a tough one.
Contrary to popular belief, Samurai only used swords as a last resort.
Most were well trained in the art of throwing gold coins at their foes.
Samurai also has Shirahadori passively, which gives a 25% chance of straight up avoiding physicals, which is really useful when your only healing is items.
Unfortunately, a Samurai's honor forbids them from using inferior Western-made swords. Until we get some sweet Hanzo steel, we are stuck with daggers and fists.
Oh hey, some fodder for showing off Zeninage.
Yeah. Zeninage hits hard from the word go. The formula for damage is (Level + 10 - Defense) * 150, which absolutely wrecks enemies with little or no defense.
However, the downside is that you are literally throwing gil at them. Zeninage costs 50 times your level in gil for every enemy hit. I just threw away 100 gil, and most random encounters won't cover the cost, especially as we level up and the cost increases further.
A samurai is deserving of a name that invokes strength and honor.
oh who am I kidding I'm just gonna throw money at all my problems
Instead of helping out the old man, I decide to snag some treasure for more money later.
I could totally replace you! Maybe get one of those nice golden chocobos I've been hearing about.
Punching or stabbing is way less impressive than Zeninage, but I really need that gil right now.
Pirates have treasure, right? I could totally make a fortune off of this!
Whoops. Fortunately the captain keels over before we walk the plank.
I also loot the better weapon and shield.
Then I head to town to sell my ill-gotten gains...
Load up on supplies...
Enjoy some improv theater...
And longingly stare at beautiful sleeping men.
With that out of the way, time for the first boss!
Wing Raptor has 0 defense and nowhere near 1,000 HP. No risk at all.
Wing Raptor
LEVEL: 4
DEATHS: 0
GIL THROWN AT BOSSES: 200G
NO BOKO GO AWAY
And we never saw them again.
In the canal, we pick up our first job ability.
That would be nice, but Mineuchi is bugged and does not actually stun. Instead, we are left with a normal attack that does not break Sleep, Confuse, or Control. There are very few uses for this in a normal playthrough (Atomos is the big one), but we don't even have any of those statuses to begin with.
Now it's time for Karl Boss. He could actually take me out with a Feeler-Tailscrew-Attack combo, just like anyone, but instead he makes a basic attack that is easily dodged.
His mistake.
Karlabos
LEVEL: 5
DEATHS: 0
GIL THROWN AT BOSSES: 450G
And now we are left to drift.
Next Time: I throw money at even more bosses because come on
